NSW: 3,000 Bankstown residents rally against airport expansion

SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - Up to 3,000 Bankstown residents this morning angrily protested
against the federal government's planned expansion of Bankstown airport, in Sydney's south-west,
which they say will mean more air traffic in the area.

Menai MP Alison McGarrity addressed the 10am (AEDT) rally at Bankstown Paceway, adjoining
the airport, and read a statement from New South Wales Premier Bob Carr, which said his
government opposes any move to upgrade the airport.

Mr Carr said he was concerned any move to forcibly transfer regional airlines from
Kingsford Smith airport could have a detrimental effect on regional and rural communities.

Forcing regional flights to land at Bankstown or anywhere else that is not Kingsford
Smith could add up to an hour's extra travel time, according to Mr Carr.

This could disadvantage regional business compared to Sydney firms, as well as discriminate
against NSW regional residents.

Mr Carr also said increased air traffic at Bankstown would mean more noise and disruption
for local families, communities and schools, and could even result in the closure of Condell
Park Public School.

Spokesman for Sydney's United Groups Against Aviation Vandalism, Joe Hillman, said
Sydney communities must unite against the plan, as it would disrupt quality of life in
greater Sydney.
